The primary objective of any product quality system is to ensure
that the intended product quality is achieved and sustained through
all the stages of the product life cycle. The product definition
is the primary vehicle for establishing the quality intention for
a product. It needs to be supported by a quality management system
that recognises the importance of the quality objectives laid down
in the product definition to the eventual marketing success of the
product.
Compliance Testing
Product specifications and all other product related activity that
derive from the product definition should be tested for compliance
against its requirements. Discrepancies should be identified, highlighted,
qualified and assessed for impact at the various quality control
points of the product life cycle.
Verifying Product Specification Conformance
Of particular importance is the verification of the conformance
of design specifications to product definitions. Comparing the completeness
of both forms of documentation greatly simplifies and is an early
check on product realisation quality. If the product quality is
only checked after initial product realisation, it is like closing
the gates after the horse has bolted. Sadly, it is too often the
method adopted by organisations that should know better.
