Backs scrape a draw to reclaim the Jacket on golf day. |

Royston RUFC Vets Golf Day 25th June 2010
On a beautiful day at Royston Golf Club the yearly battle between the forwards and backs took place. An 8am meet meant a few pints of extra cold were consumed and plenty of banter was exchanged as the teams warmed up.
The morning consisted of four balls and the partnerships of Lucky/Howell v Gordon/Smith were first out. The glare from the team forwards shirts was not enough put the backs off as they managed to get their tee shots away. But the glare obviously blinded Dave Howell from his own shirt as his first shot of the day saw him pick up ‘the most pants shot of the day’ award.
After the warm up refreshments in the morning more were taken on board by all players as the Beer Buggy followed the groups around the course. Plenty was consumed and superbly distributed by the driver Charlie Holes. Charlie went beyond the cause and was regularly seen applying sun cream to certain players!!.
Letch /Cooper were next out for the forwards against the strong pairing of Dacey C and Hannigan. Letch was in inspired form and picked up the nearest the pin award for the morning on the 06th.
The bandit backs pairing of Dacey P/Marvell were out third v Pousland and Compton. Dacey’s skill and strength showed through as he managed to pick up an award for the longest drive on the 17th whilst his partner Marvell was seen smoking cigars, downing tequila and eating fajitas.
Lastly Nobby and Drage were pitted against Payne and Bristow and a tight battle with gritted teeth raged but thinking about it not one of them has any of their own teeth!
Ten holes of match play were completed in the morning. Once the cards were handed back in the scores were level at 2-2.
Lunch was taken and a few more extra cold refreshments were taken on board and stories of greatness from the mornings play were exchanged.
The afternoon was 18 holes of Texas scramble again four balls. The beer buggy was re stocked and the first four went out.
Forwards pairing were Letch and Pousland, Lucky and Drage, Compton and Nobby and Howell and Cooper against the pairing of Dacey P and Hannigan, Dacey C and Paul Pousland’s special friend!, Payne and Gordon, Bristow and Pedro Marvell.
The afternoon awards were taken by Dave Howell for nearest the pin who used his local knowledge and used the valley’s sides on the 06th to perfection. Steph Gorden showed again the Backs always had the wind behind them by winning the longest drive on the 14th.
The contest was a hard fought affair and the Port and cakes at the 10th were very welcome but seemed to slow a few down for the remaining holes. The standard of golf raised as the beer buggy made more visits to each group and now with the co-driving skills of Stevie Crook the backs actually received some service as well. It was noticed how the newly elected president of the club was seen hanging off the back of the buggy with a can of lager in his hand shouting abuse to all that passed!!.
Once the cards were handed back in the club house there were a few tense few moments as the forwards thought they had a famous victory only to be reigned in on the last game and it was again a 2-2 draw
The prize giving took place on the putting green at the club house under glorious weather conditions. Various prizes were given out. Noticable awards were Nobby for winning the prize for keeping his teeth in for the least amount of holes, Gordon for not conceding any put above 3cm, Compton for cooking his legs to well done but leaving his feet to medium rare, Gordon for the most measurements to be taken to make sure I have not won the prize, Bandit of the day Dave Marvell, Most pants shot of the day to Dave Howell (nice pants and any other reason we could think off to give away alcohol.
